Procedure and Planning

The noise-impact study NORAH of the ARF

Following the expert discussion of the UNH on 23.04.2010 in Kelsterbach, the statements and discussions of the experts were evaluated. The coordination board then decided on 21.05.2010 to advance the implementation of its own study in Frankfurt on the basis of the workshop results.

The basic points were as follows:

  • implementation of an air traffic noise study as a regional combination study
  • impact of air traffic noise on health
  • connections between annoyance and impacts on health
  • difference of impact on the normal healthy population / disadvantaged or special groups such as the sick or children
  • inclusion of further locations if possible and useful
  • inclusion of further forms of transport if possible and useful

For the implementation and further elaboration of the content, two workshops were carried out, one for aviation and one for the community and NGO representatives. The documentation of the workshop on 23.11.2011 can be viewed here.

An accompanying group was set up on a parity basis and an external quality assurance body, consisting of reputed experts, was appointed. Under severe time pressure a schedule of specifications was developed on the basis of which a call was made for tenders. This was aimed at finding contractors to draw up practicable design proposals. The study designs were discussed and further developed in the course of several events and meetings. This provided the basis for the actual tendering of the study.

Granting of the study order April 2011

The noise-impact study was granted in April 2011 to the consortium of the Ruhr University Bochum under the direction of Prof. Guski. A short version of the study design and the main features can be downloaded below or accessed here. The study was presented to the convent on 14.04.2011.
