Can air traffic noise make you ill?
Scientists researching the effect of noise have been trying to answer this question for many years now. In the last weeks of the year 2009 and the first months of 2010, this issue featured largely in public debate, particularly with regard to Frankfurt airport.
Triggered by a study carried out at Cologne/Bonn Airport, the public was given the impression that now the causal connection between air traffic noise – in particular at night – and substantial damage and risks to health had finally been proven.
The federal parliament, the Hessen assembly, many of the neighbouring communities and citizens’ initiatives debated this issue, whereby the debate often became highly emotional. The management and coordination board of the ARF (Airport and Region Forum) decided that the UNH should hold an expert discussion on the issue with the aim of identifying the current status of findings in a transparent, impartial and pragmatic manner. It was hoped that this would contribute towards the de-emotionalisation of the debate.
This was achieved with the event on Friday, 23.04.2010 in Kelsterbach.
